Book Layout And Design
Creating designs that will communicate your story in a simple and meaningful way is at the heart of what I do.
Ledgerwood Design, Book layout and design for a customized baby book
This custom book was to be printed using Artifact Uprising.
Your book’s layout and style is much more than dropping words onto a page.
Many elements combine to make your book a great read. Now, what do I mean by a great read? Why should you be concerned with line height or spacing? Each of these elements affect your reader and how much they enjoy spending time with your book or e-book.
If you want your book to be unpleasant to read, do something like this. Make your font smaller and reduce spacing to save money during the printing process. Wow, this is really annoying to read.
Words that flow smoothly off your page.
It is important no matter what you call it: typesetting, formatting or maybe book page composition. Do you want people to read your book cover to cover without putting it down? This is why your book's design and layout should be as well thought out as the story inside.
When done well, these items grab your reader's attention in a great way. When done incorrectly, it can really slow your readers down and make a book less enjoyable. Here are a few items to consider:

    • Title Page
    • Table of Contents
    • Chapter Titles
    • Fonts
    • Line Spacing and Letter Spacing
    • Margins (or as l like to call it, not smushed)
    • Image Creation
    • Image Placement
    • Copy Editing and Content Editing

This where Ledgerwood Design comes in. I would love to help you create a book that is a delight to read. Let’s work together and make this easy for you and your readers!

THE DESIGN PROCESS: WHAT TO EXPECT
Here is a little about the design process for book layout and creation. Just so you know what you should expect when working with Ledgerwood Design.
Design Process Step 1 . Research, All About You And Your Reader
Design Process Step 2 . Styling, Give Your Readers What They Want
Step 1 . Research: All About You And Your Reader
This step is so important and all about communication. I will ask you some questions. I would love to be able to read some or all of your book. It helps determine who your readers are and what they enjoy.
Step 2 . Styling: Give Your Readers What They Want
Next, I start to put together how your book should look and feel. What colors, styles, fonts, etc . . . best represent the story you are telling.  All you have to do is sit back and pick the very best one.
Design Process Step 3 . Mockups, Your First Peek
Design Process Step 4 . Your Finished Book!
Step 3 . Mockups: Your First Peek
I will create a medium-sized pile of rough sketches when designing a layout or book images. I will narrow those down to the best 2 - 3. Those will be created digitally and sent over for you to review.
Step 4 . Your Finished Book!
This will be your favorite step! After two rounds of adjustments, your finished book is sent over. You will receive the exact file types and sizes you need. Maybe even some fun marketing mockups if you like.
Do you work on things other than books? Of course! I have worked on many projects: magazines, newsletters, curriculum and more. If you have any questions, just contact me. I am happy to answer them!

About The Book
After over a decade of working to end homelessness in the San Francisco Bay Area, this is the book I wish I had read on day one. Having provided frontline outreach in some of our nation’s largest homeless encampments, managed a growing nonprofit, and served in an executive leadership role in local government, I have taken 10+ years of on-the-ground experience to attempt to answer three questions:
1 . Why has homelessness gotten so bad in the United States?
2 . Why have most efforts to solve it failed?
 3 . What actually works?
Whether you are a concerned community member, advocate, civic leader, funder, or service provider, and whether you are brand new to the movement to end homelessness or a seasoned veteran, my hope is that this book will provide a valuable roadmap for understanding and ultimately solving The Modern Homelessness Crisis.

My Favorite Part
So, You Want To Solve Homelessness is honest, interesting, relatable and well written. I love working on meaningful projects, with amazing people. This project was a pleasure to be a part of. Often I am involved in a few parts of the book design. I loved being involved from start to finish. Being able to see each step work together has made me a better book designer.

TELLING YOUR STORY IN A MOMENT
I bet, if you are anything like me, you have poured over the words of your story time after time, making sure every period is in its place. You checked that each word flows off the page just right.
Let me give your book's cover and illustrations the same attention. I will treat it like my own, making sure every point is in its place. I will check that each idea flows off the page just right.
